Pep Guardiola returning to the Etihad would always have been an event. Returning now makes it something else.
Reports say Guardiola intends to attend Manchester City’s Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain on October 14, his first visit to the stadium since leaving the club after nearly a decade in charge. The timing comes only days after City lodged an appeal against the Premier League financial ruling that has placed the club under unprecedented scrutiny.
That makes the visit less like a ceremonial homecoming and more like a public statement of connection.

Guardiola has already chosen his side publicly
Guardiola has not attempted to create distance from Manchester City since the verdict. In a public message to supporters, he made clear that he remained behind the club, its leadership, the players, current manager Enzo Maresca and the fanbase.
That matters because Guardiola is not an ordinary former manager. His era is inseparable from City’s most successful period, and some of the seasons examined in the financial case overlap with his time at the club. There is no suggestion Guardiola knew about financial misconduct, but the broader debate inevitably touches the period in which his teams dominated English football.
His presence at the PSG match would therefore be interpreted through more than nostalgia.

The Etihad reunion also belongs to Maresca
For Enzo Maresca, the evening would create an unusual atmosphere. He is trying to establish his own Manchester City while the most influential manager in the club’s modern history watches from the stands.
Maresca has started strongly. His side are top of the Premier League and have already shown an attacking identity distinct from Guardiola’s later City teams. The Football Xtra examined that shift after City’s 5-3 win over Sunderland, where the speed and aggression of their forward play stood out.
The PSG match will test whether that identity works against elite European opposition. Guardiola’s presence would add symbolism, but Maresca’s task remains entirely footballing: control the game, protect City from PSG’s transition threat and make the Etihad feel like his team’s stage rather than a reunion tour.
Why PSG makes the return more interesting
Paris Saint-Germain are not a convenient opponent for sentiment. They represent the kind of Champions League test that can expose structural weaknesses quickly. City will need midfield discipline, clean rest defence and enough attacking movement to prevent PSG from defending in comfortable numbers.
The Football Xtra recently looked at the tactical battles around PSG’s meeting with Barcelona. The same qualities — speed in transition, technical security and the ability to punish one poor defensive spacing decision — will be relevant at the Etihad.

Guardiola’s return would send a message beyond football
The reported visit comes while City are challenging a ruling that found the club guilty of serious financial breaches. The Football Xtra has already explained the significance of the findings and the appeal process.
Against that background, Guardiola sitting inside the Etihad would inevitably be read as solidarity. It would also remind supporters that the club’s sporting identity was built through relationships that did not end the day a manager left his job.
That does not affect the legal case. An appeal board will not care who attends a Champions League match. But football clubs are emotional institutions as well as legal and commercial ones, and visible support from a figure of Guardiola’s stature matters to supporters during a period of uncertainty.
There is a risk of the night becoming about the wrong man
City will also want to manage the occasion carefully. Too much attention on Guardiola could distract from Maresca, his players and a significant Champions League fixture.
The best version of the reunion is one where Guardiola receives recognition before the match, then becomes another spectator once the football begins. Maresca does not need to compete with his predecessor’s legacy every time City play at home.
For the current squad, the priority is straightforward: the PSG game carries points and European consequences. The legal crisis, Guardiola’s return and the emotion of the evening cannot become an excuse for losing focus.

A reunion at the most complicated possible moment
Guardiola’s relationship with City was always going to outlive his contract. What nobody could have predicted was the context of his first reported return.
Instead of coming back during a quiet anniversary or testimonial, he is expected at the Etihad while the club fights one of the biggest legal battles in English football and while a new manager tries to establish a different team.
That is why Manchester City against PSG will carry several stories at once. There is the Champions League contest, Maresca’s tactical test, the legal cloud around the club and Guardiola’s presence in the stands.
For ninety minutes, City will hope the football is strong enough to become the biggest story of the night.
