Real Madrid 4-1 Sevilla: Mbappé's El Clásico Boost
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Real Madrid 4-1 Sevilla was more than an emphatic La Liga victory. It was a statement of attacking intent from José Mourinho’s side, with Kylian Mbappé scoring twice and Arda Güler and Yan Diomande also finding the net at the Santiago Bernabéu. Yet the result raises a more important question ahead of El Clásico: have Madrid found an attacking formula capable of troubling Barcelona, even without the suspended Vinícius Júnior?

The 4-1 victory on 18 October delivered three valuable points and renewed confidence before a demanding week that also includes a Champions League fixture against RB Leipzig. Mbappé’s movement, Güler’s creativity and Diomande’s direct running gave Madrid several ways to threaten Sevilla.

There are reasons for optimism, but also reasons for caution. Sevilla created opportunities, Manu Bueno punished an error in Madrid’s own half, and the visitors disputed key refereeing decisions. Furthermore, one strong performance cannot guarantee success against a Barcelona side that has started the league campaign impressively.

The real significance of this result lies in what it revealed about Madrid’s attacking combinations—and whether Mourinho can reproduce them when the pressure rises.

Real Madrid 4-1 Sevilla: What Happened at the Bernabéu?

Real Madrid 4-1 Sevilla: Mbappé's El Clásico BoostMadrid began the match with the objective of turning home advantage into momentum before their upcoming fixtures. After a relatively quiet opening, the game came alive through a sequence of attacking actions that demonstrated the team’s technical quality and willingness to exploit space.

Arda Güler opened the scoring with an impressive left-footed strike from outside the penalty area after a rapid attack initiated by Jude Bellingham and continued by Diomande.

Mbappé then doubled Madrid’s advantage in the 37th minute. After turning away from his marker and driving towards goal, the French forward finished calmly past Sevilla goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos.

The match report from [Real Madrid’s official website](https://www.realmadrid.com/en-US/news/football/first-team/reports/cronica-real-madrid-sevilla-j9-liga-18-10-2026) describes both first-half goals as outstanding examples of Madrid’s attacking quality.

After the interval, Sevilla threatened to return to the contest. Madrid had to defend several dangerous situations before Mbappé won a penalty after breaking behind the defence. He converted with a Panenka finish, giving the hosts a three-goal advantage.

Manu Bueno subsequently reduced the deficit with a composed finish after Madrid lost possession in a dangerous area. However, Diomande restored the three-goal margin shortly afterwards, finishing a strong individual move with a powerful shot from outside the box.

The final score was emphatic, but the match was not without complications. Sevilla had periods of attacking pressure and questioned the officiating following an incident involving Güler before the opening goal and the penalty awarded to Madrid.

Those complaints were part of Sevilla’s account of the game; they should not be treated as an independently established finding that the decisions were incorrect. Their presence nevertheless adds context to a match that was more competitive than the scoreline alone might suggest.

According to [Reuters’ match report](https://www.reuters.com/sports/soccer/mbappe-double-helps-real-madrid-sweep-aside-sevilla-ahead-el-clasico-2026-10-18/), the result lifted Madrid to 21 points, leaving them third and six points behind Barcelona at the time of publication.

Mbappé’s Real Madrid Performance: A More Complete Forward

Real Madrid 4-1 Sevilla: Mbappé's El Clásico BoostMbappé’s brace was the headline contribution, but the manner in which he scored is arguably more significant than the number of goals.

His first finish came after a direct attacking move, with the forward turning sharply and accelerating into a dangerous position before beating the goalkeeper. The goal illustrated a key strength: Mbappé can transform a seemingly ordinary attacking situation into a clear opportunity through his movement and pace.

His second came from the penalty spot, after he had exploited the space behind Sevilla’s defensive line and been brought down by Andrés Castrín.

These two situations illustrate different elements of his game. He can finish after receiving the ball in a tight area, but he can also threaten through runs that force defenders to turn towards their own goal.

Why Mbappé’s movement matters

Real Madrid 4-1 Sevilla: Mbappé's El Clásico BoostA forward’s value is not limited to how often he touches the ball. His positioning can determine whether defenders hold their line, step forward to challenge or retreat towards their own penalty area.

When Mbappé moves into the channel between a centre-back and full-back, the defensive line must decide whether to follow him or protect the central space. Either response can create an opportunity for another Madrid player.

That is where Güler and Diomande become important. Their ability to carry the ball, recognise forward runs and deliver passes gives Mbappé more than one route towards goal.

Madrid’s attacking structure looked especially threatening when the team regained possession and moved forward before Sevilla could restore its defensive shape.

A warning against drawing conclusions from one match

The victory offers encouraging evidence that Madrid can create high-quality opportunities, but it does not prove every part of their attack has been solved.

Mbappé can be decisive while still needing support from teammates and a system that provides the right passing options. Against an opponent that protects the central space more effectively, Madrid may need to create through wider combinations or patiently move the defence from side to side.

That distinction becomes particularly important against Barcelona, whose ability to control possession and press opponents can make open transitions harder to find.

The question is no longer simply whether Mbappé can score. It is whether Madrid can consistently create the conditions in which he becomes most dangerous.

Mourinho’s Tactics: How Madrid Created Their Goals

Real Madrid 4-1 Sevilla: Mbappé's El Clásico BoostMadrid’s goals against Sevilla revealed three useful attacking principles: quick transitions, creative movement between the lines and exploiting space when an opponent advances.

Güler gives Madrid a creative alternative

Güler’s opening goal showed the benefit of having a midfielder capable of receiving the ball in an advanced position and finishing from distance.

His contribution was not limited to the strike itself. By operating in spaces between Sevilla’s midfield and defence, he offered Madrid an additional creative route that prevented the team from becoming overly dependent on Mbappé.

Bellingham’s involvement in the first goal was also important. His ability to initiate or continue forward-moving attacks helped Madrid progress quickly rather than allowing Sevilla time to reorganise.

The tactical value of Güler is that opponents must account for his shooting and passing. If defenders focus entirely on the forward line, he can receive the ball in dangerous areas. If a midfielder steps out to close him down, space can appear elsewhere.

Diomande’s directness stretches the defence

Diomande contributed both an assist and a goal. His movement offered Madrid a direct way to advance the ball, particularly when Sevilla attempted to push forward.

For the penalty, Diomande helped create the situation in which Mbappé could attack space behind the defence. Later, he finished confidently to make the score 4-1.

His contribution demonstrates how a forward who can carry the ball at speed adds another dimension to the system. He does not have to score regularly to be useful: by moving defenders away from central areas and forcing them to defend their own goal, he can create better opportunities for a teammate.

Possession needs to produce penetration

Madrid reportedly enjoyed about 65% possession and recorded 15 shots, with eight on target, against Sevilla’s 11 shots and five on target. StatMuse’s match data also puts Madrid’s expected goals at approximately 2.24, compared with 0.76 for Sevilla.

These figures support the view that Madrid produced the stronger overall attacking performance. Expected goals estimate the quality of chances rather than simply counting attempts, making the difference useful when assessing whether the scoreline reflected the opportunities created.

Statistics should still be interpreted carefully. Madrid scored four times, but their performance also included moments when Sevilla threatened and a costly loss of possession before Bueno’s goal.

For Mourinho, the objective is to retain the directness that made Madrid dangerous while reducing unnecessary defensive exposure.

The Vinícius Júnior Problem Before El Clásico

Madrid’s preparations for Barcelona have an obvious complication: Vinícius Júnior is suspended.

The Brazilian received a four-match suspension following his sending-off in the match against Villarreal. The punishment rules him out of several La Liga fixtures, including El Clásico on 25 October, according to [Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/sports/soccer/real-madrids-vinicius-miss-clasico-after-four-game-suspension-2026-10-14/).

His absence matters because Vinícius offers more than goals. His acceleration and dribbling can force defenders to protect the wide channel, creating space for Mbappé and Madrid’s midfield runners.

Without him, Madrid must find another way to stretch Barcelona’s defensive line. Diomande’s performance against Sevilla provides one possible option, while Madrid could also use a different combination of wide attackers and central forwards.

The final decision will depend on fitness, form and the tactical approach Mourinho chooses for the game.

How can Madrid compensate?

There are several possible solutions.

First, Madrid can use Diomande’s direct running to attack the space that Vinícius would normally threaten. That would offer pace and forward movement, although the two players are not identical in their dribbling style or established responsibilities.

Second, Güler can become even more important as a creator. His passing and ability to receive between the lines could help Madrid build attacks when Barcelona close down the wide areas.

Third, Madrid can use Mbappé’s movement to create opportunities for others rather than asking him to finish every move. When he pulls defenders away from central positions, midfielders must be ready to attack the resulting spaces.

The danger is that trying to replace Vinícius through individual changes may leave Madrid without the collective movement that makes the attack effective.

The solution must be tactical as well as personnel-based.

Madrid’s Defensive Questions Remain

Real Madrid 4-1 Sevilla: Mbappé's El Clásico BoostAlthough the attacking performance was encouraging, Madrid did not keep a clean sheet. Sevilla created several opportunities, and Bueno’s goal exposed the danger of losing possession in the wrong area.

Against Barcelona, the consequences of those mistakes could be greater.

Barcelona have players capable of quickly exploiting spaces behind an advancing defence. If Madrid lose the ball with too many players ahead of it, the opposition can attack before the defensive structure has been restored.

That makes the relationship between Madrid’s midfield and defensive line crucial. A successful press requires players to move together: if one player closes down the ball while teammates remain too deep or too wide apart, the opponent may find a route through the pressure.

Madrid must also avoid confusing defensive aggression with reckless positioning. Pressing high can help keep Barcelona away from dangerous areas, but only if the forward line, midfield and defence remain connected.

Militão’s return offers encouragement

Éder Militão received a warm reception when he came on late in the Sevilla match, making his first appearance since undergoing hamstring surgery in April.

His return is a positive development for Madrid’s defensive options. However, one brief appearance should not be treated as proof that he is ready to play a full match or immediately return to his previous level.

His fitness and match sharpness will need to be assessed carefully, especially with the Champions League match against Leipzig scheduled before El Clásico.

Madrid’s defensive preparation must account for availability, not reputation alone.

El Clásico 2026: Can Madrid Match Barcelona?

The 4-1 result has strengthened Madrid’s confidence, but Barcelona remain the benchmark they must overcome.

At the time of Reuters’ report, Barcelona led the standings by six points. The upcoming meeting therefore carries significance beyond the rivalry: a Madrid victory could reduce the gap, while a Barcelona win would strengthen their position in the title race.

Mourinho has also made clear that the Champions League match against Leipzig comes first. That fixture is not a distraction from El Clásico; it is part of the same demanding schedule that requires careful squad management.

Madrid must avoid treating the Sevilla performance as a ready-made blueprint. Barcelona are likely to offer a different test, especially in their ability to keep possession and exploit transitions.

Three battles could decide the match

1. Mbappé against Barcelona’s defensive line

If Madrid can deliver passes into space and support Mbappé’s runs, he can make Barcelona defend while moving towards their own goal. If Barcelona protect that space and control the supply line, Madrid may need more patient combinations.

2. Güler’s freedom between the lines

Güler could be one of Madrid’s key creative players. Barcelona will need to decide how aggressively to close him down without leaving other midfielders free to progress the ball.

3. Transitions after possession is lost

Both sides must manage the spaces they leave behind when attacking. For Madrid, losing the ball in advanced positions could expose the defence. For Barcelona, allowing Madrid to launch rapid counterattacks could bring Mbappé into dangerous positions.

These are tactical questions rather than guaranteed outcomes. The final line-ups, fitness updates and the Leipzig match will all influence the approach.

The most useful conclusion from the Sevilla game is that Madrid possess multiple ways to attack. Whether those options can survive a more demanding opposition structure remains to be seen.

Final Verdict: Has Mbappé Found the Formula?

Real Madrid 4-1 Sevilla: Mbappé's El Clásico BoostReal Madrid’s 4-1 victory over Sevilla was a strong response before a defining week. Mbappé scored twice, Güler provided creativity, Diomande offered direct running and the team produced several excellent attacking moves.

The evidence suggests Madrid are capable of combining individual quality with faster, more varied attacks. That is encouraging for Mourinho, particularly with Vinícius unavailable for El Clásico.

But the result does not eliminate every concern. Madrid conceded, Sevilla created chances and the defence was punished when possession was lost in a dangerous area. Barcelona will pose a different challenge, and the missing Brazilian forward makes Madrid’s preparations more complicated.

The real test is whether Madrid can maintain their attacking threat without losing defensive discipline. If Güler and Diomande can support Mbappé effectively while the team protects transitions, Madrid will have a credible route to challenging Barcelona.

For now, the Sevilla victory provides momentum—not a guarantee.
