Anthony Gordon at Barcelona: How La Liga Is Rebuilding His England Game

Anthony Gordon did not move to Barcelona simply to become a faster winger in a different shirt. His first months in Spain are beginning to show a broader version of the player England knew from Newcastle.

The numbers have attracted attention — five assists in his first seven Barcelona appearances at the time of his latest England camp — but the more important change is visible in where and how he receives the ball. Gordon is still direct and aggressive, but he is spending more time making decisions in crowded areas rather than living almost entirely on transitions.

That development has carried into international football. He was one of England’s most dangerous players against Spain and then produced another influential display against Czechia. Harry Kane has spoken positively about the confidence Gordon appears to have gained from the move, while Gordon himself has argued that his technical intelligence was not always fully recognised in England.

The point is not that La Liga has suddenly taught Gordon how to play football. It is that Barcelona are asking him to display parts of his game that were less visible in the Premier League.

Barcelona have changed the spaces Gordon must solve

At Newcastle, Gordon’s most obvious strengths suited a team that could attack quickly: explosive running, pressing, chasing space behind defenders and carrying the ball over distance. Barcelona often give him a different problem.

Opponents regularly defend deeper against Barça. That means the first question is not always whether Gordon can beat a full-back in a sprint. It can be whether he can receive between two defenders, combine in one or two touches, recognise an underlapping run or wait for the moment when a passing lane opens.

Those are small decisions, but Barcelona’s attacking structure is built on them. Playing alongside technically demanding teammates such as Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Pedri leaves little room for an attacker who only contributes through athleticism.

Read Here The Guardian’s report on Gordon’s development since moving to Barcelona.

The five assists tell part of the story

Five assists in seven games is a strong start, especially for a player adjusting to a new league, language and tactical environment. But the statistic matters because of what it suggests about his role.

Gordon is not simply being asked to finish moves. He is participating in the phase before the finish: the run that drags a defender, the pass across the box, the combination that creates an overload and the decision to recycle possession rather than force a low-percentage shot.

That is important for England because Thomas Tuchel does not need another attacker who only waits for space. England frequently face opponents who sit deep, and their recent defeat to Spain showed how difficult elite international matches become when every possession has to be used carefully.

England are seeing more than pace and pressing

Gordon’s reputation in England was built partly around intensity. He could press, run and attack open grass. Those qualities remain valuable, but they can become a limiting label if they hide everything else.

His Barcelona spell is making his off-ball intelligence and passing choices harder to ignore. The more comfortable he becomes inside rather than only outside a full-back, the more roles Tuchel can give him.

Why the move can help Barcelona as much as Gordon

Barcelona’s attack has already been one of the most productive in Europe this season. We recently looked at the reasons behind their extraordinary scoring rate in our analysis of Barcelona’s 28-goal attacking run.

Gordon adds a different type of threat to that structure. Yamal can manipulate defenders with close control and passing angles. Raphinha can attack space and finish aggressively. Gordon gives Barça another player who can make repeated high-speed runs without losing the willingness to work when possession is lost.

That matters in Hansi Flick’s football because pressing is not an optional extra. Barcelona want to recover the ball quickly enough to keep opponents trapped. Gordon’s Premier League education makes him unusually comfortable with that demand.

At the same time, Barcelona are improving the side of his game that needs patience. The exchange works both ways.

The England question is now about selection, not potential

Gordon has moved beyond the stage where England are waiting to discover whether he belongs at international level. The question is now how Tuchel fits him into a front line that also contains established stars and younger attackers demanding minutes.

His recent performances give him a strong argument because he can contribute in different game states. Against a team that leaves space, he can run. Against a low block, Barcelona are teaching him to combine. When England need pressure without the ball, his intensity remains one of his strongest qualities.

There are still areas to improve. His first Barcelona goal was taking time to arrive, and finishing has not always matched the quality of his movement. But an attacker can influence a match without scoring, particularly in a side where chance creation is distributed across several players.

The timing of the development is useful for England. Tuchel is still refining the identity of a team that finished third at the World Cup and is now trying to build toward the next tournament cycle.

Gordon’s move to Spain gives the manager something he did not have a year ago: a winger whose game is being tested every week in a possession-heavy environment without losing the qualities that made him dangerous in England.

Barcelona have not replaced the old Anthony Gordon. They are forcing him to reveal more of what was already there.
