The Premier League has always been described as the most demanding league in football. But as the 2026/27 season approaches, the pressure on managers has reached another level.
Nine clubs will begin the new Premier League campaign with new managers, meaning almost half of the division has changed leadership during the summer. It is a managerial turnover rarely seen in English top-flight football, with the current figure matching the record set in 1946/47.
The new faces include Marco Rose at Bournemouth, Xabi Alonso at Chelsea, Pierre Sage at Crystal Palace, Álvaro Arbeloa at Fulham, Gary O’Neil at Ipswich Town, Andoni Iraola at Liverpool, Enzo Maresca at Manchester City, Matthias Jaissle at Newcastle United and Oliver Glasner at Nottingham Forest.
The question is no longer simply who will succeed.
The bigger question is: who will crack first?
A Premier League Built for Pressure
The scale of the managerial change tells its own story.
Five of the nine new coaches have never previously managed a Premier League match: Rose, Alonso, Sage, Arbeloa and Jaissle. For them, the opening weeks will represent a completely different challenge from anything they have experienced elsewhere.
The Premier League does not give managers much time to adapt. Tactical ideas must work quickly, new signings must settle immediately and poor results can transform optimism into pressure within weeks.
For some of these managers, expectations will be enormous.
For others, survival itself could define success.
Xabi Alonso: Chelsea’s Biggest Gamble?
Few appointments will attract more attention than Xabi Alonso at Chelsea.
The former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfielder began his Chelsea tenure in July 2026, bringing with him a reputation built during a remarkable playing career and a growing coaching profile.
But Stamford Bridge is not a patient environment.
Chelsea’s expectations are significantly higher than those of most clubs in this managerial group, and Alonso will be judged not only on results but also on the identity of the team he builds.
That makes him one of the most fascinating managers to watch.
He could have Chelsea challenging near the top of the table by January—or find himself facing difficult questions if results fail to match expectations.
The margin for error is small.
Enzo Maresca: The Man Taking Over From Pep
If Alonso inherits pressure, Enzo Maresca inherits something arguably even more difficult: Pep Guardiola’s shadow.
Maresca has succeeded Guardiola at Manchester City after already having experience at the club as a coach and Guardiola assistant. He also guided Leicester City back to the Premier League before becoming Chelsea head coach in 2024, where he won the Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup and secured Champions League qualification.
Yet Manchester City is a different challenge.
Replacing Guardiola means replacing a manager who shaped the club’s modern identity and delivered an extraordinary era of success.
Maresca therefore does not simply need results.
He needs to convince supporters that Manchester City can evolve without losing the principles that made it dominant.
Andoni Iraola: Liverpool Is a Different World
Perhaps no new manager faces a more interesting tactical test than Andoni Iraola at Liverpool.
Iraola replaces Arne Slot after three successful seasons at Bournemouth, where he helped the club qualify for Europe for the first time in its history.
But Liverpool brings an entirely different level of scrutiny.
At Bournemouth, poor runs could be absorbed. At Anfield, every result is magnified.
That is particularly important because Iraola’s Bournemouth spell showed that his teams could experience both impressive unbeaten runs and difficult periods. Current analysis notes that his Bournemouth tenure included an 18-match unbeaten Premier League run, but also an 11-match winless spell.
Liverpool will not allow the latter to continue unnoticed.
The good news for Iraola is that he now has a squad with considerably greater quality and depth.
The challenge is turning that quality into consistency.
Matthias Jaissle: Newcastle’s Young Gamble
Newcastle’s decision to appoint Matthias Jaissle adds another intriguing layer to the managerial revolution.
The 38-year-old German was appointed on August 5, replacing Eddie Howe after almost five years at St James’ Park.
Jaissle’s coaching career has already produced impressive achievements.
He won consecutive Austrian Bundesliga titles with RB Salzburg and later led Al-Ahli to back-to-back AFC Champions League titles.
But the Premier League is another examination altogether.
Newcastle have ambitions beyond simply competing. The club expects to remain in the European conversation and challenge the established elite.
Jaissle therefore enters England with an opportunity to become one of the league’s next major coaching names—but also with enormous expectations.
Oliver Glasner: Can Forest Keep the Momentum?
Oliver Glasner brings something different to Nottingham Forest: proven European pedigree.
The Austrian won the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt and later enjoyed success at Crystal Palace, where he delivered the club’s first FA Cup before adding the Conference League. He joined Forest in July 2026.
His challenge will be translating that success into a new environment.
Forest have become one of the Premier League’s more unpredictable clubs, and Glasner will be expected to provide stability while maintaining ambition.
The pressure may not be as immediate as it is at Chelsea, Manchester City or Liverpool, but expectations can rise quickly when a manager arrives with a reputation for winning trophies.
The Other New Managers
Marco Rose arrives at Bournemouth with extensive Bundesliga experience, having managed RB Salzburg, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig.
Pierre Sage takes over Crystal Palace after building his reputation at Lyon and leading Lens to the Coupe de France and Champions League qualification.
Álvaro Arbeloa returns to England as Fulham manager after an impressive coaching journey through Real Madrid’s youth system. He is also a World Cup and two-time European Championship winner as a former Spain international.
Gary O’Neil, meanwhile, takes charge of Ipswich Town after previous Premier League experience with Bournemouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Each arrives with a different story.
Each has a different target.
But all nine share the same problem: time.
So, Who Could Crack First?
Predicting the first manager to leave is dangerous, particularly before the opening ball has been kicked.
However, the current managerial landscape suggests that pressure will not be distributed equally.
Managers at clubs with Champions League ambitions will face the most immediate scrutiny. Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool cannot afford long periods of transition.
Newcastle and Nottingham Forest also have ambitious projects that could become demanding if early results disappoint.
For clubs lower down the table, the pressure will be different. There, managers may have more patience—but poor results combined with relegation danger can quickly change the equation.
The Premier League’s managerial carousel is therefore already spinning before the season begins.
A New Era for Premier League Managers
The most significant story may ultimately be bigger than which manager gets sacked first.
Nine new managers represent a changing Premier League.
The traditional managerial model is being challenged by younger coaches, technical directors, sporting directors and increasingly international recruitment networks.
The league is becoming less predictable, more tactical and arguably less patient.
That makes the 2026/27 season a fascinating experiment.
Nine managers have been given the keys.
Only one can lift the Premier League trophy.
And before that happens, several will have to survive the most brutal managerial examination in football.
The season has not even started yet—and the pressure is already on.
