Semenyo Injury: Can Man City Cope Without Haaland?

Antoine Semenyo injury news has turned Manchester City’s impressive start to the season into a test of squad depth, tactical flexibility and player management. The Ghanaian forward is expected to miss up to eight weeks with a knee problem, while Erling Haaland’s fitness remains under assessment ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League meeting with AEK Athens.

For Enzo Maresca, the timing could hardly be more challenging. Manchester City have won their opening seven Premier League matches, but their 3–2 victory over Ipswich Town on 17 October came at a cost. Semenyo limped away after appearing as a substitute, while Haaland also required attention following a knock to his foot and ankle.

Maresca has confirmed that Semenyo could be out until December. However, he has not ruled Haaland out of the AEK fixture, explaining that the Norwegian looked better during recovery and could be available after a final assessment.

That distinction matters. City are definitely losing one important attacking option for an extended period, but they are not yet certain to be without their leading striker on Tuesday.

The bigger question extends beyond one Champions League match. Can Manchester City maintain their attacking efficiency without Semenyo, manage Haaland’s workload and remain competitive if their main centre-forward also needs time out?

The answer will depend on more than replacing one player with another. Maresca may need to change the way City attack, distribute their creative responsibilities and manage an unusually demanding schedule.

Antoine Semenyo Injury: What Manchester City Have Confirmed

Antoine Semenyo Injury: Shocking 8-Week Blow for Man CityManchester City confirmed that Semenyo suffered a knee injury late in the 3–2 win over Ipswich. Following scans, Maresca said the problem was not as serious as the club initially feared, but the winger could still be unavailable for approximately eight weeks.

Speaking ahead of the AEK Athens match, Maresca said: “It could be eight weeks. Now in this moment the most important thing for him is his recovery.”

The manager also indicated that Semenyo could return around December, describing the prospect of his comeback as being like having a new player in terms of energy.

The full update is available through [Manchester City’s official website](https://www.mancity.com/news/mens/maresca-aek-athen-written-press-conference-63928003), while [Reuters’ report of 19 October](https://www.reuters.com/sports/soccer/citys-injured-semenyo-out-eight-weeks-haaland-may-be-fit-face-aek-2026-10-19/) confirms the expected duration of the absence.

Why Semenyo’s absence matters beyond goals

Semenyo has contributed two goals and three assists in the Premier League this season, according to Reuters. Those numbers are valuable, but they do not fully explain why his absence creates a tactical problem.

His attacking profile offers City direct running, physicality and the ability to carry the ball towards the penalty area. A forward who can advance possession quickly gives a team an alternative when short passing combinations are blocked.

That becomes particularly useful against opponents defending deep. Rather than relying exclusively on intricate combinations around the box, City can use a direct runner to stretch the defensive line, force defenders to retreat or create space for midfielders arriving behind the attack.

Semenyo was also being considered as an option at centre-forward when Haaland needed a rest. Maresca acknowledged that City could use the Ghana international as a No. 9, while adding that other solutions would need to be explored.

His injury therefore removes two potential benefits: his contribution from wider attacking positions and his value as an alternative in the central role.

City still have talented attackers, but replacing those functions may require more than a straightforward personnel change.

Erling Haaland’s Fitness: Why City’s Main Concern Is Workload

Semenyo Injury: Can Man City Cope Without Haaland?Haaland’s situation is the immediate concern because his goals have been central to City’s excellent league start.

The Norwegian scored twice against Ipswich, extending his scoring run to 12 goals across his previous eight appearances for the club. He also reached 100 non-penalty Premier League goals in 139 appearances, the fastest player to reach that milestone according to the figures reported after the match.

Those achievements explain why Maresca is reluctant to think about replacing him before a decision is necessary.

The manager told reporters that Haaland could be available against AEK, but added that the club needed to assess him following a training session. His fitness status should therefore be treated as uncertain until the final team news is confirmed.

Why resting Haaland is becoming more complicated

A striker’s value is not measured only by the goals he scores. Haaland’s positioning occupies centre-backs, gives City a target for crosses and forward passes, and creates space for attacking midfielders to move into dangerous areas.

When he is available, City can build an attack around a recognised central striker. Teammates know where to look when they break through the lines, and opposing defenders must account for his movement in the penalty area.

If Haaland misses a match, City can still dominate possession, but the nature of their attacks may change. They could need more movement from midfield, additional runs from wide players or a different approach to creating space close to goal.

The risk is not that City suddenly become incapable of scoring. Their squad has considerable technical quality. The concern is whether the alternative structure produces the same level of threat against organised opponents.

Availability must take priority over short-term pressure

City are chasing results in both the Premier League and Champions League. That creates an understandable temptation to use a leading scorer whenever he is close to being fit.

However, a decision made only to address Tuesday’s fixture could affect the team’s options over the following weeks. If Haaland’s injury worsens, City could lose him for longer than the immediate match.

The medical staff must determine whether he can safely play, while Maresca must decide whether his contribution justifies the risk and whether an alternative can produce an adequate performance.

A successful squad is not simply one that fields its best players in every game. It is one that keeps enough players available to maintain performance across an entire campaign.

Manchester City Tactics: How Maresca Can Replace Semenyo

Semenyo Injury: Can Man City Cope Without Haaland?City do not need to abandon their approach because one forward is unavailable. They need to identify which aspects of Semenyo’s role are essential and decide how those contributions can be reproduced collectively.

The first option is a relatively direct replacement in the wide attacking positions. A different winger could provide width, carry the ball forward and attack the spaces between the opposing full-back and centre-back.

That solution would preserve much of City’s existing structure, although a replacement would not necessarily deliver Semenyo’s physical qualities or decision-making.

The second option is to redistribute attacking responsibility across the front line. City could ask wide players to make more runs into the penalty area while midfielders provide additional forward movement.

This approach could create more unpredictability, but it would also require better coordination. If several players move centrally at once, City could lose width. If nobody attacks the penalty area, possession may become sterile.

The importance of direct running

Against a compact defensive block, City need players who can destabilise defenders. Passing the ball quickly is useful, but a defender may be comfortable allowing opponents to circulate possession outside the penalty area.

A direct runner changes that equation. When a forward accelerates towards goal, defenders must decide whether to step out, retreat or provide cover. Those decisions can open passing lanes for nearby teammates.

Semenyo’s absence means Maresca must determine which available players can produce that threat most effectively.

Phil Foden offers a different type of solution through his movement, combinations and ability to receive the ball in tight spaces. Iliman Ndiaye is another option mentioned in reporting on City’s attacking alternatives. Neither should be assumed to be a like-for-like replacement; the best selection depends on the match plan and each player’s availability.

Could City become less predictable?

An injury can sometimes encourage a team to develop a different attacking pattern.

If City use more midfield runners, rotate positions more frequently or ask a different forward to occupy the central defenders, opponents may have to prepare for a new threat.

But tactical experimentation carries risk. Changes made without enough training time can reduce the coordination that makes City’s passing and pressing effective.

Maresca must therefore distinguish between adjustments that can be introduced quickly and structural changes that need more practice.

The most sensible short-term approach may be to preserve City’s overall system while making selective changes to the positioning of their attackers.

Can Phil Foden Play as Manchester City’s Centre-Forward?

Semenyo Injury: Can Man City Cope Without Haaland?Maresca has explicitly identified Foden as one possible solution if Haaland is unavailable, while stressing that he is not the only option.

Foden has the technical ability to combine in tight spaces, move between defensive lines and finish attacking moves. Playing him centrally could help City maintain close combinations around the penalty area without relying on a traditional target striker.

However, the role comes with important differences.

What City gain with a false nine

A false nine generally drops away from the opposition’s centre-backs to receive possession in midfield or between the lines. This can force a defender to decide whether to follow the player or hold the defensive line.

If a centre-back steps forward, space may open behind the defence for a winger or attacking midfielder to exploit. If the defender stays back, the false nine may receive the ball in an area where he can turn, combine or create an overload.

For a technically gifted team, this can be an effective way to break down opponents who defend close to their own penalty area.

Foden could help City create those situations because of his movement and ability to exchange passes quickly with teammates.

What City would lose without a conventional striker

Haaland offers a different set of qualities. He can threaten the space behind the defence, compete for deliveries into the penalty area and occupy centre-backs through his physical presence.

A false nine may move defenders out of their usual positions, but the team still needs someone to attack the space that becomes available. If the wide players and midfield runners do not make those movements, City could dominate possession without providing a consistent target near goal.

The challenge is therefore collective rather than individual. Foden cannot simply replace Haaland’s goals and positioning by occupying the same area of the pitch.

Maresca would need to design the attack around different movements, potentially asking wingers to make more diagonal runs and midfielders to enter the box more frequently.

Is Foden the best solution for every match?

Not necessarily. A false nine may work particularly well against a side that defends deep, because movement away from the central defenders can create confusion and open passing lanes.

Against an opponent that presses aggressively or leaves space behind its defensive line, a different forward profile might be more effective.

That is why Maresca has described Foden as one possibility rather than a guaranteed replacement.

The best solution should depend on the opponent’s shape, City’s available players and the physical demands of the match. Flexibility is valuable, but changing the system simply because a key player is absent does not automatically produce a better result.

The Champions League Problem: Why the AEK Match Matters

Manchester City host AEK Athens on Tuesday, 20 October, in their third league-phase match of the Champions League. The game comes after their 4–2 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain, which left them with three points from their first two matches.

The fixture therefore carries significance beyond the immediate injury situation. City need a response in Europe, and a second consecutive disappointing result would increase the pressure around their continental campaign.

Maresca has said that City’s ambition must remain the same regardless of the competition: the team must attempt to win the game.

But the approach against AEK will need to reflect the players actually available.

If Haaland is fit, City can use their established central attacking reference while considering how much of the match he should play. If he is unavailable, they must decide whether to use Foden centrally, select another forward or distribute the role across several players.

How AEK could exploit City’s uncertainty

An opponent preparing to face City will study the potential team selection and consider how the absence of a central striker might change their defensive responsibilities.

If City play without a conventional No. 9, AEK could try to remain compact, protect the central channels and force City’s attackers to create opportunities through wide areas.

On the other hand, if City select a mobile false nine, AEK’s centre-backs may face difficult decisions about whether to follow that player into midfield.

The tactical details will depend on the actual line-up, but one principle remains: City must create enough movement around the penalty area to prevent their possession from becoming predictable.

The Champions League match is also an opportunity to test an alternative structure before it becomes necessary for a longer stretch of the season.

Fixture Congestion and the Risk of Losing More Players

Semenyo’s injury arrives during a demanding period. The Guardian reported that City faced seven matches across 21 days in October, following international commitments for several members of the squad.

The same report noted that Haaland, Mateo Kovačić, Matheus Nunes and Nico O’Reilly had also experienced injury concerns or discomfort around the Ipswich game. However, Maresca’s subsequent update indicated that Semenyo was the only player expected to be absent for approximately eight weeks; the others were described as broadly available, with Haaland requiring a final assessment.

That distinction matters. City have an important injury absence and several recent fitness concerns, but it would be premature to label the entire squad unavailable.

Rotation is a tactical requirement, not just a medical precaution

Frequent matches reduce the time available for training, recovery and tactical preparation. Coaches must also balance the desire to field their strongest line-up against the need to preserve players for later fixtures.

City made six changes for the Ipswich match, according to the Guardian’s report. Rotation can help distribute workload, but it may also affect the rhythm of the team, especially when players have limited time to develop combinations.

Maresca’s task is to create a system that remains effective when personnel change.

That requires more than having talented players on the bench. Replacements need to understand the team’s pressing triggers, defensive responsibilities and attacking movements so the overall structure remains coherent.

The return timeline matters beyond one game

If Semenyo is unavailable for around eight weeks, City may have to navigate a considerable run of domestic and European fixtures without him. His absence could also affect how often Haaland is asked to start or complete matches.

Maresca will need to distribute minutes carefully, especially if City remain involved in a close league race and are attempting to recover their Champions League position.

The decision should not be judged solely by one result. It must be assessed over a sequence of matches, measuring whether the team maintains its chance creation, pressing intensity and defensive control.

A deep squad provides an advantage only when the players are used effectively and remain fit enough to contribute.

Final Verdict: Can Manchester City Cope Without Their Two Forwards?

Semenyo Injury: Can Man City Cope Without Haaland?Manchester City’s injury situation is a genuine test, but not necessarily a crisis that will derail the season.

Semenyo’s expected eight-week absence removes a valuable attacking option and a possible alternative at centre-forward. Haaland’s fitness is the more immediate concern, but the latest available information does not confirm that he will miss the AEK Athens game.

If Haaland is available, City can manage his workload while adjusting the use of their other attackers. If he is ruled out, Foden and alternative attacking combinations give Maresca potential solutions, although none would reproduce every aspect of Haaland’s game.

The bigger issue is sustainability. City have started the Premier League season with seven consecutive victories, yet they must now demonstrate that their tactical structure can survive injuries, rotation and a demanding schedule.

Maresca’s success will depend on how well he adapts without sacrificing the qualities that made City so productive in the first place. That means creating chances through several routes, maintaining coordinated pressing and protecting the fitness of the players still available.

Semenyo’s absence is a setback. Haaland’s uncertain availability is a warning about the importance of depth and workload management. Neither fact alone determines City’s season, but together they make the next few weeks a significant test of Maresca’s planning.

The coming matches will reveal whether City can turn squad depth into a genuine competitive advantage—or whether their attacking system remains too dependent on a small number of key players.
