Julián Álvarez Transfer Future: What a New Agent Could Change

Julián Álvarez did not leave Atlético Madrid in the summer, but the transfer story around him has not disappeared. The latest development is happening away from the pitch: reports in Spain say the Argentina forward is considering new representation after a turbulent window in which Barcelona, Arsenal and Real Madrid were all linked with his future.

That does not mean a January transfer is agreed or even inevitable. It does mean the structure around one of Europe’s most valuable forwards may be changing, and in modern football that can matter almost as much as a public transfer request.

Why the agent question matters now

Álvarez has worked with Fernando Hidalgo for much of his career, but AS reported that the player is weighing a change after the events of the summer. His father, Gustavo, is said to be involved in finding a new agency, with former Paris Saint-Germain player Javier Pastore and The Elegant Game linked with the role.

Pastore’s involvement attracts attention because his agency was associated with Enzo Fernández’s major move from Chelsea to Manchester City. That does not make an Álvarez transfer automatic, but it shows why clubs will monitor the decision closely.

An agent change often signals that a player wants a different strategy: clearer communication with the club, access to different markets, or a new approach to negotiations. In Álvarez’s case, the timing is impossible to separate from a summer in which his future became one of La Liga’s longest-running stories.

Atlético still hold the strongest card

Álvarez remains contracted to Atlético until 2030. That gives the club control. They do not need to sell because a rival makes contact, and the player cannot create leverage through an expiring contract.

The more immediate challenge is rebuilding the relationship between player, club and supporters. Álvarez was booed during the summer saga and began the season without the form that made him such an important Atlético player previously. A recent goal with Argentina has at least offered a footballing reset after a long dry spell.

For Diego Simeone, that matters more than transfer speculation in October. An engaged Álvarez gives Atlético a forward capable of pressing, combining and finishing. A distracted Álvarez creates a weekly debate about January.

Barcelona remain the obvious storyline

Barcelona were repeatedly connected with Álvarez during the summer and remain the most natural name whenever his future is discussed. The attraction is easy to understand. He can play through the centre, move across the front line and operate in a pressing system without needing the team to be built around him.

But wanting a player and completing a transfer are different things. Atlético would require a huge financial package, Barcelona would need room within their squad and financial planning, and the player would have to decide that leaving Madrid is still his priority after the situation calms down.

Arsenal have also been linked. Their interest makes tactical sense because Álvarez offers a different profile from a fixed penalty-box striker, although there is no indication at this stage that a January agreement is close.

A new agent changes the conversation, not the contract

The temptation with agent stories is to treat them as hidden confirmation of an imminent move. That is too simple. Players change representatives for contract negotiations, commercial reasons, family considerations or because communication broke down during a previous process.

What changes is the network around the player. If Pastore or another agency takes control, clubs that failed to make progress in the summer may reopen communication through a different route. Atlético will also have a new person across the table if discussions over the player’s role or long-term future begin again.

The next few months should therefore be read in two parts. On the pitch, Álvarez needs minutes, goals and a better relationship with the Atlético support. Off it, his representatives need to decide whether the summer was a closed chapter or merely a failed first attempt.

The Barcelona angle also sits inside a wider market in which elite clubs are already planning their next attacking moves. We recently examined how Barcelona links can reshape a major player’s contract story, while our Arsenal transfer analysis shows why Arteta’s recruitment plans remain active.

Álvarez is too important and too expensive for his future to move quietly. A change of agent would not guarantee the destination, but it could reset the negotiations that went nowhere in the summer. That is why the story matters before the January window has even opened.

January may be more about positioning than a sale

Even if Álvarez stays at Atlético through the winter, the next transfer window can still be important. A new representative can use January to reopen relationships with interested clubs, establish the financial conditions of a future move and understand which teams are prepared to make him a central part of their project. Atlético can also use the period to make their own position clear. That means the absence of a January transfer would not necessarily end the story; it could simply move the decisive negotiations towards the summer while allowing Álvarez to focus on restoring his form.
